Awareness of Radiomarathon in Australia is continually
growing. Radiomarathon Australia 2004 was a huge success
with fundraising activities generating $250,000 - a fantastic
result for children with special needs in Australia. This
impressive result (which surpassed the 2003 figure) indicates
the charity's potential to grow.
Each year, Radiomarathon begins with the
Children's Drawing Competition. In view of the Olympic
and Paralympic Games in Athens, the theme in 2004 focused
on the Olympics and attracted over 3000 entries! The
winning entries across the different age categories
were framed and have become a limited edition collection.
The 100 x $100 lunch in Adelaide hosted
by the St George College marked the official launch
of Radiomarathon 2004. The luncheon brought together
approximately 130 prominent members of the community
including The Hon Carmel Zollo MP, representing the
South Australian Premier, The Hon Mike Rann MP.
Sydney's Anesi Taverna Night was the next
event on the fundraising calendar. It wasn't long before
Anesi's vibrant atmosphere had about 140 guests packed
on to the dance floor until late. While only a small
event, it was a very successful night particularly through
money raised by the raffle draw.
Bowling days were held in New South Wales,
Victoria and Queensland. As expected they were all enjoyable
afternoons with plenty of competition and prizes ranging
from Winners Trophies congratulations to Rita's Team
to Euro Cup posters and even wooden spoons for the not
so fortunate teams.
The Sydney and Melbourne Main Dinners proved
very successful again this year. Laiki Group Executive
Chairman, Mr Kikis Lazarides was present at the Melbourne
event. Entertainment included the "Divas"
comedy act, the "Gemini Twins" acrobatics
performance and Sandy's Frank Sinatra cabaret act. Auction
items soared to tens of thousands during a nail-biting
auction, which raised $75,000 in Melbourne alone!
Radio Appeals were also held throughout
Australia in order to raise funds for Radiomarathon.
LBA staff volunteered to take calls and offer food and
refreshments (all kindly donated by local businesses)
to those who visited our branches in person to make
their donation to such a worthy cause.
Overall, 2004 was another successful
year thanks to all the help of LBA staff and friends
alike who eagerly anticipate the 2005 Radiomarathon
programme of events.
