18th June 2007:

St George Kapouti Club raised a record $52,000 on Saturday night in support of Thalassaemia Research, with Radiomarathon contributing $15,000.

The fourth annual charity dinner took place at the Ultima Reception Centre in Keilor Victoria. The successful event was held in memory of the late A/Professor Panos Ioannou.

The event is a credit all four organisations involved, the St George Kapouti Club, the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Radiomarathon, the Thalassaemia Association and the sponsor Laiki Bank which covered many of the administrative costs. Their contribution will enable Dr Jim Vadolas from the Institute to continue the late professor’s pioneering work.

Funds raised are used to assist in the research and development of treatments for the disease, which affects the ability of the human body to reproduce red blood cells and means that Thalassaemia sufferers require consistent blood transfusions to survive.

Mr Kostas Flouris, President of the St George Kapouti Club, said of the event, “We are extremely happy with the results of tonight’s fundraising and thank all our guests and volunteers who made it possible.”

Dr Jim Vadolas added, “The Thalassaemia research unit is on the brink of major developments in the treatment of this disorder, thanks to the support of organisations such as St George Kapouti Social Club, Radiomarathon and Laiki Bank, we can continue this important work”.

Chairman of the Radiomarathon Trust, Mr Michalis Athanasiou, also General Manager of Laiki Bank added, “On behalf of Radiomarathon I thank the St George Kapouti Club and all in attendance here tonight for your generosity and for making it possible to carrying on the passionate work of the late A/Professor Panos Ioannou. As always, Radiomarathon and Laiki Bank are pleased to support this worthy cause”.

 Additional Notes:
